COMPAREE VERDICT

This one blew up (5,000+ stars in weeks) and you can see why — a robot vacuum you print and own instead of a sealed appliance, with real LiDAR navigation. Honest status though: it's build-in-public and early. Right now there's a working ROS2/Gazebo simulation and the creator's excellent LiDAR-robot tutorials, but the vacuum's own CAD, PCB and BOM are still being finished — so today it's a project to follow and learn from, not one you can print end-to-end. Star it, join the Discord, and build the crash-course robot in the meantime.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Build instructions are still being written — expect to read code and issues, not a polished manual
  • LIDAR + SLAM tuning is where most time goes
  • Hardware is still work-in-progress — the BOM and CAD aren't finished. Today you can run the simulation or follow along, not print a finished vacuum.
  • Trick from the creator: source spare parts from commercial vacuums (Roborock wheels, Dreame fan) to keep costs down.

Does it actually navigate or just bounce around?

It uses 2D LIDAR and does real mapping on a Raspberry Pi — proper navigation, not random bounce.

Is it finished / kit-ready?

It's an active, real project but early — the creator is still writing full build docs. Great if you like being an early builder.

Can I repair and upgrade it?

That's the whole point — every part is printed or off-the-shelf and the software is open. No sealed appliance.

Can I build it right now?

Not yet — as of now Oomwoo is a working ROS2/Gazebo simulation with the hardware (CAD, PCB, BOM) still being designed in public. Great to follow and learn from; not a finished build.

The creator recommends scavenging Roborock wheels and a Dreame fan to keep costs down. Is raiding commercial appliances for parts smart pragmatism, or does it undercut the open-hardware point?

Expectation-setting from our review: right now Oomwoo is a working ROS2/Gazebo simulation with the physical hardware — CAD, PCB, BOM — still being designed in public, so you can follow along but not print a finished vacuum today. On the plus side, it's one of the most actively maintained repos we've featured, with commits landing within days of our check. Anyone else enjoy watching hardware get designed in the open like this?
