COMPAREE VERDICT

This is not a beginner project. Hugh Jeffreys calls it the most difficult project he has completed. You strip an M1 Mac mini down to its logic board and power supply, swap the iMac's 1440x900 screen for a 1920x1200 MacBook Pro panel with a display controller, and rewire the whole arm through a neck less than 11 mm wide. He says the footage covers over 9 hours of work. The result has the performance of an M1 Mac mini with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the original power button working. The hardest part is the arm: getting the two halves closed again stalled the project for weeks, until it went into a vice and got some hits with a mallet. If you have never taken a Mac apart, start with something else. If you have, and you love the iMac G4 design, this is a project to remember.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • —The 3D printed bracket exists on Thingiverse (6527295) and fits the M1 Mac mini logic board in the iMac G4 base.
  • —There is no BOM, no wiring diagram, no step-by-step guide — you are following a 19-minute video and pausing constantly.
  • —Hugh Jeffreys does not publish the display controller board model or the specific MacBook Pro panel part number in the video.
  • —The arm cable routing is the hardest part: the neck is under 11 mm wide, and closing the arm afterwards stalled the project for weeks.
  • —This is a one-off restoration, not a kit. You need a donor iMac G4, a donor M1 Mac mini, and a replacement LCD panel.
  • —There is no licence because there is no repository — this is a YouTube restoration project, not open-source hardware.

Can I build this?

Print3D printed bracket for the Mac mini board (Thingiverse 6527295)
BuyA donor iMac G4, an M1 Mac mini to take apart, a 1920x1200 MacBook Pro LCD panel, a matching LCD controller board, a flexible HDMI cable, thin extension cables for the ports
ToolsPrecision screwdrivers (Torx security bits for the Mac mini), side cutters, pliers, soldering iron, heat shrink, screen adhesive, a vice and a mallet, a 3D printer for the bracket, toothpaste for cleaning
SkillsAdvanced. You must be comfortable disassembling a Mac mini down to the logic board, identifying and desoldering connectors, routing fragile ribbon cables through tight spaces, and reassembling a machine with no service manual. Prior LCD panel replacement experience is strongly recommended.
TimeA long weekend at least. He says the footage covers over 9 hours of work, and the arm alone held him up for weeks.
Cost$$, mostly the M1 Mac mini you take apart, plus the MacBook Pro panel and controller board. The video gives no prices; his iMac was free.
SafetyMains voltage: the Mac mini's own power supply sits in the base and he solders new leads onto it. Work only with it unplugged.

This build involves mains voltage — for adults comfortable with electrical work only.

Build at your own risk. Projects involve tools, electronics and sometimes mains voltage — follow the creator’s safety notes.

Navigation into the creator’s own docs — we don’t rewrite the guide, we route you to the source.

  1. 1.Watch the full video once without pausing to understand the scope
  2. 2.Download and print the Mac mini bracket (He drilled extra holes in it for the fan screws and glued in the original threaded posts.)
  3. 3.Source a donor iMac G4 and confirm the arm hinge is not seized(He used the larger of the three iMacs. Its screen was leaning because of loose screws inside the arm.)
  4. 4.Identify the exact LCD panel part number for your chosen screen size and buy a matching controller board(He uses a 1920x1200 MacBook Pro panel with the same dimensions as the original screen and an AliExpress controller board, but gives no part numbers.)

KNOWN ISSUES

  • The video does not name the LCD controller board model or the MacBook Pro panel part number. You will spend an hour cross-referencing panel connectors on AliExpress before you order.
  • The arm is the hardest part. After the rewire the two halves would not close; it stalled the project for weeks until it was clamped in a vice and tapped shut with a mallet.
  • The neck of the arm is under 11 mm wide, too small even for a USB-C connector, so the new display cable has to be fed through by hand and some insulation got damaged on the way.
  • The printed bracket he found online takes the two logic board screws but not the fan screws, so he drilled extra holes and glued the original threaded posts into it.
  • The original iMac power button needs a custom bracket to press the Mac mini's button; he made one from an old galvanized pipe bracket.
  • Soapy water does not shift the staining on the old plastic. He uses toothpaste and repeats it on every piece of the case.

Can I use an M2 or M4 Mac mini instead?

Hugh says you could also fit the M2 model. He used an M1 because he got a good deal on one. Newer models are not covered in the video.

Does the original iMac G4 power supply still work?

He does not reuse it. He uses the Mac mini's own power supply, mounted under the printed bracket, and solders on the connector from the old iMac power supply so it plugs straight into the original iMac power socket.

Why a MacBook Pro screen?

He chose the 1920x1200 MacBook Pro panel because it was the only display he could find with exactly the same dimensions as the original 1440x900 screen.

Is the iMac G4 base large enough for an M1 Mac mini in its original case?

No. Hugh strips the Mac mini down to the logic board and power supply only. The full Mac mini case will not fit.

Discussion1

FROM THE COMPAREE TEAM

Hugh spent over 9 hours on this and called it the hardest project he has done — and the arm was the worst part, a fight to close even after routing the cables. If you have taken on a restoration this unforgiving, what kept you going when it looked impossible?

CompareeTEAM11h ago

Practical notes from our verification: there is no repository, no published parts list and no written guide, only the video of a one-off restoration. The 3D printed bracket (Thingiverse 6527295) exists, but Hugh does not name the LCD controller board or the MacBook Pro panel part number, so you will cross-reference connectors before you order. The biggest unknown is your donor iMac's arm: on his, closing it after the rewire took weeks and a vice. The result is fully working, but this is not a kit.
