No. Sublimation requires pressures below 6 mbar; diaphragm pumps typically bottom out around 100 mbar and will not get you into the range where freeze drying works efficiently.
How long does a freeze-dry cycle take?
Depends on sample size and water content, but expect 12-24 hours for small food samples. Commercial units are faster because they have better vacuum and more cold capacity.
Can I skip the cold trap and just vent the water vapour?
No. The water vapour will destroy the pump oil in minutes. The cold trap is not optional.
What is the single part most likely to fail?
The cold trap warming up mid-cycle. If it does, water vapour reaches the pump and you lose vacuum. Monitor the trap temperature and have a backup cold source ready.
